I think the strength and measure of this movie is not in how closely it followed the book, or whether the characters were one-dimensional or fully developed, but rather in what memories it evoked in the viewer. I was a college freshman in 1963, so I well remember and was reminded of the unfairness of that time. I particularly remember a heated discussion I got into with a Sunday School teacher. I don't remember how it began, but it devolved into her saying to me, among other things, Well, you wouldn't a colored person to spend the night in your home! And surely you wouldn't want to eat a meal in their house! I thought this was just plain stupid, and said so. In fact, the maid who worked for us had spent several nights in our home when my mother was at the hospital with my grandmother. And she cooked my meals at our house, and I truly couldn't see the difference in that and eating at her house. By the time I met up with Mother for church, word had already reached her of my disrespect to the SS teacher. She just looked at me and said, MUST you do things like that? But she never told me not to. I think she was torn between agreeing with me and not wanting me to be disrespectful of my elders.
Incidentally, I was informed that one referred to "coloreds" as "women, not "ladies." I asked why, and was informed that that was just the way it was. Once again, I replied with, Stupid!
I also remembered the water fountains in the local Montgomery Ward. The shiny, new, water cooler had a sign above it that said, Whites, while the old, stained, chipped water fountain (not cooler! had a sign that said, Coloreds." How reprehensible!
I did not know from those days that some whites did not want or allow their maids to use the toilets in their homes. So I actually learned something from the movie.
When I saw this movie today, sitting on the row behind me were 3 black ladies who were about the age to have been maids during the '60s. I felt such shame, wondering what painful experiences they must have been remembering.
I would have liked to have seen more comments in these reviews about people's personal reactions and memories, and less synopsizing of the story.
This is one movie I will look forward to purchasing when it becomes available on DVD.
